Community Service

As part of the Mass Academy experience, students are expected to complete 50 hours of community service per year. However, I've found a lot of fulfillment and enjoyment doing community service within areas that I like or that I find particularly high needs. While to some this requirement would sound daunting, I'm actually grateful for the push to go out and do this work, and I'm proud of what I've done to help others!

Service Events

This event was one set up by Mass Academy, in which all the students and staff visited a farm run by the Community Harvest foundation, and helped with field work such as pulling weeds and picking fruits. It was a labor filled and challenging day, but also opened my eyes to the hard-work that occurs on these farms, so I gained a lot of respect and appreciation for those that work these jobs everyday. I also gained some useful skills and practiced getting my hands dirty!

Assistant Teacher at North High School

This is an image of me (red flannel) at North High in a physics class working as an assistant teacher! I got this position through my father who is a teacher at the school. So far I have only worked a few days, but I plan to work more over my breaks. Doing community service in this way is fun and rewarding because I get to use my knowledge of physics and math to help out students that are struggling with their work. North High School is also considered a "High-needs School", due to its many non-english speaking students and students with learning difficulties/dis-abilites. Trying to work around this, and find ways to help the students is a rewarding challenge because when I'm able to help them understand the material or complete the work, it is amazing to receive their gratitude and to be able to help those in need with such an important aspect of their life: education!

Assistant Coaching with youth soccer team

Because of my love for soccer, I also do volunteer coaching for the local youth girls soccer team. I got this position due to my younger cousin being on the team. I currently help out the team during fall and spring seasons when possible. I love doing community service in this way because I'm able to express my love for the sport, help others get better at the sport, and I can practice my teaching and leadership skills. It's also an amazing feeling to see these kids get so much fun and fulfillment out of soccer the same way that I do.
