Mathematical Modeling at Mass Academy goes beyond the traditional high school curriculum by using open-ended problem solving and collaborative work. We cover many different types of math from pre-calculus and statistics to trigonometry and modeling real-world problems with math.
The problem of the week (POW) in math is a challenge where we have to work in groups to solve a math problem. The “Happy Birthday POW” tasked groups with finding a given day of the week between 1900 and 2100 based on the date. This would allow students to determine the day of the week that they, or anyone else, was born.

Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC) is a competition where students have to decide on a real-life problem to solve mathematically. My team and I, who are currently national semi-finalists, are trying to come up with a solution to cut down on firefighter, and other first responder, response times. We will be recording data and finding optimizations to allow firefighters to reach fires more-quickly which will help save lives. While we are still working on our solution, the first parts are already completed and are included in the PDF.
