Extracurricular Activities

Throughout high school, I have had many amazing opportunities to participate in some awesome extracurriculars. Below are some of the extracurriculars I am currently involved with, and if you click here, you can find some of the extracurriculars I used to be involved with.

Best Buddies

I am still heavily involved with the Oxford High School Best Buddies Chapter. Best Buddies is an organization focused on fostering one-to-one friendships between students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities. My time with the organization began in 8th grade when I served as a member, but then after that, I decided to increase my involvement and began serving as the treasurer. Since coming to MAMS, I have stepped down from my officer position but have maintained active membership. My favorite activity to participate in is our Halloween Party, where we all dress up in costume and play games such as "Singo" and watch Halloween cartoons together. It's an incredibly rewarding experience that promotes inclusion and community-building.

Robotics

As part of FRC190, I contribute to building local and regional competitions. We work as a team to design a solution to a "game" that has been predetermined. We then compete against other high school teams who have designed similar robots to take on this game. It is an awesome way to practice and apply engineering concepts outside of a traditional classroom setting.

CAD Club

The CAD Club is dedicated to enhancing skills in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. We used the popular online software, On-Shape to transform our most imaginative concepts into reality. In the first semester, we learned basic skills through a guided slideshow. During the second term, we divided into small groups to construct our own marble runs. The objective was to maximize the time, with the rule that the ball must stay in motion throughout and end independently, without any human intervention. Below is a picture of what my group came up with, which includes a wheel that can spin for a set amount of time, keeping the marble in motion, and then a trap door that can swing open, allowing the marble to escape after a set time.

Community Center Event

Creative Engineering

Creative Engineering allows me to explore innovative solutions to design challenges, combining artistic creativity with technical problem-solving. In this club, we engage in hands-on work with Arduinos and different components that we can connect to them. The instructor, Mr. Loven, is awesome and always can provide helpful insight. In this club, we experimented with many things such as different sensors for temperature and humidity, LCD screens, and even SD card shields to write data to an SD card. We also get to take apart various household electronics, including everything from computers to drills to hotdog ovens. Through this club, I have learned so much more about the capabilities of Arduino as well as how the technology around me works..
