Math Modeling

Our Math Modeling class, taught by Ms. Durost, shows us ways to use math concepts in a more real-world application type process. Rather than just learning formulas and memorizing processes, we use concepts we might already know and apply them in ways that allow us to think critically and build our problem-solving skills. Many of the students come from different math backgrounds, but the class allows us to learn and revise a lot of the major topics from each course such as calculus, statistics, geometry, etc. We also work on a lot of group modeling projects, such as HiMCM and MTFC, which give us a way to work more with our peers to come up with a complex solution to a mathematical problem. These projects help us develop the skills to analyze data sets, make reasonable assumptions, as well as communicate our reasoning and results clearly. Overall, this class allows us to see how mathematics is applied outside the classroom and helps us prepare for more real world situations of using mathematics.

Epsilon School

The Epsilon project was a group math modeling project that we did in class. In groups of four, based on the prior data we were given about the school, we needed to figure out which subject needed more teachers based on the size of the upcoming grade. We were given the amount of current and upcoming students and the current amount of teachers. Based on the calculations we performed, including drop out rate, class distributions, and ratios of change, we decided that one teacher be added in for art, music, chemistry, biology, social studies, english, and foreign language, specifically spanish and french.

MTFC Proposal

At mams, all students have to participate in this competition called MTFC, or the Modeling the Future Challenge. In this, students get into groups and work to find a solution to a world problem of their choosing using math modeling. The teams work to find data sets and sources, analyze them, and create a mathematical solution. My team is working on the risk of hedge funds and finding a way to minimize this risk, allowing for more financial and market safety.
