Math

This class is taught by Ms. Burns. Math at MAMS is different because we don’t learn the normal math concepts. Instead, we learn more about modeling real-life events and how to apply the concepts we learn to the real world. We cover topics in a day or two and combine them to solve questions. This year, we have already covered mods, patterns, statistics, and more. The structure of the class is also different. Instead of being taught a certain concept, we learn it by ourselves through homework. Then, we discuss them in class.

We started the year with a math modeling challenge called Modeling The Future Challenge (MTFC). MTFC is a competition held by the Actuarial Foundation that gives students the chance to mathematically model a real-world issue with guidance from professional actuaries. I’m currently working in a team with Sohini, Anthea, Jessica, and Adel to develop a risk assessment model for the monetary value in the e-sports market. We advanced to the next round of the competition, and will be meeting with an actuary to discuss the next steps for our model. Here is the project proposal which we drafted and submitted for the first round. MTFC Project proposal.

During the statistics unit in math, we worked on creating a presentation about One-way and Two-way ANOVA tests. I worked on this presentation with Andrey, Danny, and Ila. Throughout two weeks we researched this topic and created our presentation of how to use an ANOVA. I learned more about ANOVAs through this presentation and it was a fun project to do. Then, we presented this to the class. Here is a link to the presentation: ANOVA Presentation. ANOVA Presentation.
