This class is taught by Ms. Small. It is mainly a discussion-based class that teaches an overlap of humanities and history. We analyze different texts, documentaries, and videos to answer the question: “What does it mean to be human?” We also write one essay per topic in the class. So far, we have covered topics such as Walden, education, satires, and immigration.
Everyone starts out by reading the infamous Walden by Henry David Thoreau. In A term, we formed groups to create a skit inspired by Walden. I worked with Sharvi, Anthea, and Medhansh. We created our version of a speed dating show. This concept was inspired by the YouTube channel Wired which has a series called The Button. Then, we performed our skit at Bournedale. Then, everyone had to write an essay about a topic relating to education. I chose to write mine about why nap time should be incorporated into the school schedule so students can perform better academically. I thought this was a unique perspective to take because when you think about the topic of education, sleep is not the first thing that comes to mind. However, ever since coming to MAMS, I realized that many people are chronically sleep deprived due to the academic work load. So, I wanted to talk about the benefits sleep can bring to a student. Right before winter break, we focused on the genre of satirical writing. We analyzed multiple different types of satirical pieces and then had to write a satirical analysis on a piece of our choice. Since I could write about whatever I wanted, I really enjoyed this crafting this essay because I was not restricted by the prompt. I chose to write my analysis based on an excerpt from Trevor Noah's talk show. This was actually a challenge because his talk show was a mix between comedy and satire, so I had to identify the satirical pieces and only analyze those. Here is my Satirical Analysis.
