Microplastics are known to be extremely toxic, inducing oxidative and DNA damage and causing developmental and reproductive toxicity - which was determined through study on plants and animals. However, there is very little research on the effects of these harmful particles on human health. The lack of research leads to a lack of awareness about these small plastic particles and a lack of action regarding protocols against them. This research finds that these microplastics are toxic to endothelial cells, majorly affecting both viability and morphology. This creates a need to further study these microplastics as they are so destructive to endothelial cells, which are critical cells. As such, this study hopes to bring attention to the destruction these particles can cause if not acted upon immediately.
