Math Modeling

Math Modeling is a course taught by Ms. Burns that focuses on math. However, this course differs from your typical high-school math class. In this class, we work on learning math concepts and then applying those concepts to other problems. Additionally, throughout the year, we work on various projects where we apply these mathematical concepts to modeling and propose solutions to real world issues.

Epsilon School Project

This project was our first experience of the year with applying mathematical concepts to modeling. In this problem, there was a school (Epsilon) to which a new wing was being added, thus allowing the school to be able to support more students. The goal of this project was to distribute the seven newly hired teachers among the various departments (English, math, music, etc.). We then presented our solutions to the class.

Modeling the Future Challenge

The Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC) is a math modeling competition that involves both data analysis and risk management. Through this challenge, students are able to pick a certain issue they would like to address and create an actuarial model to mitigate the risks associated with that issue. My group chose to focus on the effects of social media on the mental health of teens because social media is something that is prevalent nowadays, but it’s starting to have negative consequences.
