Humanities

Humanities

Humanities is a course taught by Mrs. Small! We learn about various topics related to human nature and society to answer the question "what does it means to be human?". Students discuss with the class their thoughts and interpretations of the reading as well as what they've found interesting. Our units consist of readings to develop the skills and context behind the topic. Finally, we write an essay about the topic such as advocating for a change in education or using satirical analysis to show why a satire is successful.

Original Satire

In this project, students were tasked with creating a satire that utilizes satirical elements and humor. Niranjan and I decided to satirize dark patterns within social media platforms and websites that give cookies. Dark patterns are the practice of obtaining private information about the use of an app or website. Social media platforms usually use dark patterns to obtain consent to track personal information and sell it to third parties.

Walden Skit

In the summer, we read the book Walden by Henry David Thoreau. The story is about a man who stayed 2 years in the woods and ultimately reveals human nature when in solitude. This assignment was a group assignment where we created a skit with props and a script and acted it out. This assignment was very creative and I enjoyed working with Andrew, Ayaan, Ishana, and Lauren. The story is about an ant colony, where the ruler is inspired by Henry David Thoreau as he displays his hypocritical nature. The ants rise against the king, a overthrow him.
