About Me

Hello! I'm Megan Ashun, and I'm a second-generation Ghanaian-American. I am an aspiring environmental engineer and currently a senior at the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science. Family, community service, and solving problems are a few things that make me feel the most fulfilled.

Hobbies

In my free time, I like to read, crochet, draw, and take pictures. My favorite book is A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor by Hank Green. I love to learn new things, and I think that there’s always more to discover. As of right now, I am learning Twi, Ga, and Spanish.

Work Experience

During the summer of 2022 and 2023, I was a camp counselor for VEX Robotics and Worcester Arts Explorers Summer Camp. There, I taught 4th to 6th graders how to use drag and drop code, led building activities, and facilitated arts and crafts projects. During the summer of 2021, I worked as an intern for Worcester Youth Cooperatives, a social project meant to advocate for the homeless in downtown Worcester.

Extracurriculars

Apart from robotics, I participate in several other extracurriculars from my sending school, South High Community School. Click here to visit my sending school's newspaper! I act in drama club, compete in math team, and play tennis and volleyball as well.

Community Service

Throughout my junior year at Mass Academy, I had the opportunity to volunteer at various organizations. For the majority of my volunteer hours, I spent my time in the children’s department of my church, attending to the children aged 0-3 during church service. In addition, I regularly cleaned toys and mats to ensure a clean, safe space for the children during service.

Another large portion of my volunteer work was completed as a member of The Society of Women Engineers Next. Through SWENext, I was enabled to go out into my community and help conduct various STEM-based programs for young women in my community. We were able to visit Framingham State University and Girls Inc. in Worcester. We introduced topics such as computer-aided design, drag and drop coding, and robotics during our visits!

Future Aspirations

In the future, I want to use my career to solve humanitarian and environmental issues. A quote from Theodore von Kármán that has stuck with me is, “...engineers create the world that never has been.” The world is always changing, and I want to make good change.
