Who I Am
My name is Liam Bratane, and I am a student at Mass Academy! My sending school is Shrewsbury High School. I am 16 years old, having been born July 2009. I have many hobbies, but unfortunately very little time to spend on any one of them. You can read below about these hobbies, as well as my family members!
My Family
I am the oldest sibling in a family of five, with one 3-year-old sister, Stella, and one 9-year-old brother, Marius. Because of my role as eldest sibling, I am very accustomed to helping babysit Stella. She is extremely cute! My father is from Norway, and I love visiting my grandparents and family there, contributing to my wish to be more literate in Norwegian.
Although I spend most of my time in school and doing homework, I have many hobbies both big and small. For instance, I like playing video games, creating art or games in the DESMOS graphing calculator, art, martial arts, archery, baking, robotics, and travel.
Video Games
Like your typical teenager, I enjoy playing video games in my spare time. My favorite of these games is Minecraft, but I am always willing to try out a new game suggestion. I really enjoy Minecraft because of the incredible amount of creativity and customization of gameplay that Minecraft allows for. For instance, I dabble most in a mechanic of Minecraft called redstone, essentially a form of programming by arranging different blocks that interact with each other in different ways.
DESMOS
I first got into DESMOS art in freshman year of high school, when I was very bored in class and had only the graphing calculator app as a distraction. Through my experimentation with changing variables, I found that it was possible to create amazing patterns--and even games--just by extrapolating on the right equation. This is incredibly fun, as it bridges the gap between my interest in math and my will to make art or games.
Here are some of the graphs that I have made:
Art
Besides making art in a calculator, I also enjoy creating art through more traditional means, and I am taking weekly art lessons. It is very calming and fun to sit down and create art through any medium. Some mediums I have tried are sculpting, sketching with pencil, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, and weaving. I find that I am worst at sketching, but once I get the chance to spend a large amount of time on the project, I can manage to create a passable final product. My greatest achievement in this hobby was when I placed third in my age group and district of the Junior Duck Stamp competition.
My art school:
Martial Arts
As an exercise, I do martial arts in the form of Muay Thai and Jujitsu. Muay Thai involves more stand-up kicking and punching, while Jujitsu involves on the ground wrestling. I am currently best at Jujitsu, as it is slightly slower with near-constant contact, allowing me enough time to think. In contrast, the high-speed punching and dodging of Muay Thai is not yet something I can keep up with, as I tend to panic while sparring. Nonetheless, I mainly just enjoy light sparring with a friend, regardless of the kind of martial arts.
Archery
I find archery to be very fun, though I have limited time to practice this hobby. The required accuracy of handling a bow is very satisfying when achieved, and I find myself hitting the center of the target more often than not. Opportunities for lessons are limited, however, so I have not been able to practice and improve as much as I would like to.
Baking
Baking and cooking are invaluable skills that I greatly enjoy, both in doing the baking and in eating the resulting treats. My main “specialty” in baking is to make baguettes, and I have tweaked a recipe learned from my grandmother to make a recipe of my own. Additionally, I have made many forms of donuts, as they are a sweet treat that I find myself unable to resist. Fresh homemade baguettes in the morning, paired with some fresh donuts in the evening, is a dream that I find myself able to accomplish. I am quite proud of this skill.
Robotics
In Shrewsbury High School, I spent a significant amount of time at my school’s robotics club. As a team competing in the FIRST Robotics competitions, we were team 467, or Center of Mass. The aim of FIRST Robotics is to build a robot conforming to the rules of a yearly game, with the rules, elements, and goals changing every year. In my old team, I would mainly jump back and forth between projects led by others, providing additional assistance and emotional support. I was also the main producer of buttons, otherwise known as decorative pins, for the team. Now, I have already joined team 190, the robotics team of WPI and Mass Academy. It will be interesting to see what the experience is like in a team with more equipment, and how I adapt to the new team. I will always remember team 467’s success last year, with us qualifying and flying out to the world championships in Houston, Texas. However, I look forward to the upcoming year of fun and challenges.
Travel
My family loves to travel, with my parents always at some stage of planning a trip for the future. It would be impossible to recap all of my escapades, so instead I will highlight two examples: My yearly travel to Norway, and my recent world trip in the summer.
Norway
Traveling to Norway to visit family is a special treat that, fortunately, my family has been able to accomplish at least once for almost every year. The obvious exception to this would be during the pandemic, when the world and travel shut down. Apart from this, I love visiting my grandparents, cousins, and further extended family in Norway. However, this is not the only reason I love Norway, as the wonderful weather and scenery is a huge bonus for me. I am a winter person, so Norway’s colder summers and winters feel perfect. Additionally, Norway is covered with beautiful fjords, and even my grandparent’s home is right next to a trail to an amazing view of the water.
World Trip
My recent summer trip is quite possibly the craziest trip I have ever been on, visiting a total of nine countries for prolonged periods of time over the summer. I will break the trip down in more detail for each location, but, as a summary of the locations, I visited French Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, and Kenya. Overall, this trip gave me many new experiences, and I now have stories to tell for the rest of my life.
The first stop in our trip was Bora Bora, in French Polynesia. We stayed in the Four Seasons resort, living in a hut suspended over the beautiful blue water. The views and weather were astounding, and I got to go diving for the first time in my life. This experience, as a dream vacation for many, was unsurprisingly amazing.
Our visit to New Zealand can be split into two parts, with our travels in both the North and South Islands. First, we booked a camper van and drove around the North Island. This was much more “roughing it” than we had been in Bora Bora, as we had five people in one large camper van. We drove all around, visiting various beaches, views, and family friends. My favorite part of this was when we visited one friend’s house, which they had built themselves. The entire house was a beautiful work of art, with murals and various artistic aspects crammed into every spare corner.
After this, we flew to Queenstown, in the South Island. This area was much colder, and we had rented a house to go skiing in the nearby mountains. Although the skiing was not amazing, what made up for this was the incredible views of Queenstown from the mountains. We were all taken aback by the perfect view, with the occasional cloud of fog flowing through and down steps of land like a waterfall.
Our time in Australia was spent in Tasmania, an island off the coast of mainland Australia. Here, we visited another resort called Saffire Freycinet, a wonderful experience that gave a full view of the surrounding nature. My favorite moment in Tasmania, however, was not in the resort. Instead, I most greatly enjoyed going to the Museum of Old and New Art, or MONA. This innovative museum held many thought provoking, interesting, and even at times absurd art. For instance, there was one installation featuring synchronized water pumps that would periodically “print” the news headline in the air, another inspired by quantum mechanics, and yet another featuring simply a heavy rock placed onto an unbent sheet of glass. This last piece was arguably the most frightening, as it felt as if the thick sheet of glass, straining against the perfectly calibrated weight of the rock, could shatter at any moment. Before leaving Australia, we spent some time in Sydney, observing the opera house.
Japan was one of my favorite locations, with an interesting and beautiful blend of city and nature inhabiting the same space. In Hakone, we were able to see the base of Mt. Fuji, although the top had been obscured by clouds. We ate so many cup noodles then, as there was a huge selection in every convenience store. Later, in Tokyo, I delighted in the huge amount of art sprinkled throughout the colorful city. There were screens everywhere, either showing an ad or simply an interesting pattern.
In Seoul, South Korea, we visited the war memorial. There were many beautiful, interesting and sad displays here, but we must have spent most of the time looking at the planes on display. Stella had fallen in love with a green prop plane in the collection, thus beginning her wish to become a pilot. Later, we visited the old palace grounds. This was a really cool view, as the skyline abruptly changed from bustling city to serene mountains, all with the structure of the palace in the foreground. We spent much of the rest of our stay in malls, to avoid the sweltering heat of Seoul.
We met up with my grandmother (on my mother’s side) in Hong Kong, and she helped to show us around the place she grew up. I was able to meet some of my extended family for the first time(that I remember), as well as see the plot where my grandmother spent her childhood. Of course, the house had been replaced with a huge apartment complex, but it was still interesting to walk or drive around the city, listening to my grandmother and extended family reminisce about her childhood.
Our stay in Singapore felt almost too short, with how many different activities we crammed into only a few days. We went to the Universal Studios amusement park, with many fun rides with a huge variety of themes. We also visited the Gardens by the Bay; domed enclosures filled with a variety of plants and structures to explore. Before leaving Singapore, we spent time in the airport, rated as the best airport in the world. It connected to a gigantic mall built around a giant man-made waterfall coming from the center of the glass-domed roof. This mall even had activities such as a ropes course and light show, so we had plenty of fun before needing to leave to catch the plane.
We spent some time in Cape Town, observing the incredible views of and from Table Mountain. Taking the gondola up was interesting, as the entire platform rotated to give a full view of the surrounding area. The mountain itself was also breathtaking, as the flat expanse was home to many unusual species of plants, with weird and beautiful flowers or leaves. The sensation of walking around on the top of the mountain, seeing the views from every angle, was strange, and not something one could experience in many other locations.
Our time in Kenya was spent at two different national parks, each with its own experience. The first of these was the Masai Mara park, where we stayed in a fancy tent next to a river. The area had huge expanses of plains with tall grass, meaning that many small animals could hide in the grass, but could also be spotted from a distance. On safari, we saw many animals such as lions, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, storks, buffalo, wildebeest, and many more small animals and birds. At the second park, in Meru, the landscape was much more covered in bush and trees. This made it harder to spot animals until we were close. We stayed in a huge open house on a hill overlooking the range, a much different experience than the previous safari. While on safari, we saw many of the same animals, except with the addition of rhinos and various species of monkey and baboon.
