My name is Eddie Goodwin and I am a Junior at Mass Academy of Math and Science. Before going to Mass Academy, I attended Tantasqua Regional High School in Sturbridge, MA, which is where I've lived my whole life. I grew up in a more rural area of town and some of my fondest memories from my childhood are of playing in the woods with my cousins, building forts, and pretending to be stranded in the wilderness. When I was a toddler, my family got chickens, and soon I was taking care of them. I have become very interested in different breeds and genetics, and learned a lot through raising different breeds over the past 10+ years. I get my heritage breed chickens from a special farm in the Midwest called the Sand Hill Preservation.
I live with my Mom, Dad, and two sisters. All 11 of my cousins on my Dad's side live or grew up on the same road as I live. The 10 cousins on my Mom's side live in Connecticut, New York, or Maryland. I am also interested in ancestry. My grandfather on my Mom’s side was an immigrant from Belgium. My family also has ancestry in Ireland, Italy, England, Wales, and Scotland.
I played tennis both years I was at Tantasqua, and I hope to keep playing tennis there in the future. I also have competed on Tantasqua’s Math Team. Mountain Biking Club was another activity that I enjoyed at Tantasqua. As of September 2023, I am in Biotech and Math Team at Mass Academy of Math and Science (MAMS).
One volunteering opportunity that I participated in was creating STEM lessons for kids at the Abby Kelley Foster Elementary School. The objective of this volunteering was to teach elementary school students more about STEM. As a group several other students and I put together activities and lessons for the children. These activities were based on a spool racer that used rubber bands to power the wheel, which students experimented with different aspects of the racer to change the speed, as well a lesson about biology with different bird beaks representing different sized beaks for different foods.
Significant volunteering time was also spent with the Community Food Collaborative garden in Sturbridge. This organization works on a community garden that donates all produce to local food pantries. This work included setting up drip irrigation, planting, and collecting produce.
