❭ In this class, taught by Ms. Small, we explore the fundamental nature of our being. So far this year, we’ve covered various diverse topics. Throughout the summer and at the start of the year, we discussed Walden by Henry David Thoreau and even made skits exploring the multiple themes presented. In our most recent unit, we looked at and analyzed satires as a literary form. I really enjoyed looking at American Psycho, the satirical analysis of which I’ve also included.█
Throughout the Summer and the start of the year, Humanities class revolved around Walden by Henry David Thoreau. As per MAMS tradition, we made a skit that utilized themes from Walden and created a fresh take on the characters. Our skit was styled as a detective story, where Thoreau, the main character and detective, investigated the downfall of his bean sales. During our trip to Camp Bournedale, we were given the opportunity to perform our skits in front of the school. Here is the script for our skit.
A crucial unit we covered in Humanities this year was satire. During this unit, we took a look at various popular satires and analyzed the use of rhetorical and literary devices to convey a message. In this assignment, we analyzed satire of our choices, and I chose American Psycho, a 2000 movie directed by Mary Harron that portrays the dark sides of contemporary American consumerist culture. I’ve provided my analysis here.
