Welcome to Humanities

The humanities course at MAMS is taught by Ms. Small and covers a range of topics. Often called Hum, it combines English, History, and Social Studies and explores what being human really means. So far, we have covered topics of transcendentalism with Henry David Thoreau's Walden, education in America, rhetoric, and satire.

Satirical Analysis Essay

As part of our Satire unit, we analyzed a text to determine how specific satrirical devices were used in order to satirize or critique a certain aspect of society. I wrote my satirical analysis essay on a text title "Hermann the Irascible" by H. H. Munro, going into how the author used several different rhetorical and satirical devices to criticize society's attitudes and views on women's rights.

Education Essay

During our unit on education in America, we explored several different topics related to education and how education has changed in the past as well. We came up with our own prompts to explore a specific topic related to K-12 education and wrote an essay about that. My essay was based off of looking at legacy admissions and whether they promote a sense of community or further perpetuate exclusion.
