Mathematics

Mathematical modelling is a unique course. It introduced us to the process of representing real-world phenomena through mathematical models. In addition, the course exposes students to advanced mathematical topics, such as number theory. Overall, it has strengthened critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

MTFC Project Proposal

This project proposal for the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (MTFC) outlines my team’s plan to investigate how the adoption of autonomous vehicles could impact carbon emissions, traffic patterns, and public health. The assignment focuses on identifying risks, proposing mitigation strategies, and defining data sources and modeling goals to prepare for a full mathematical analysis in the project phase.

Problem of the Week

This assignment is a logic and problem-solving exercise focused on using a balance scale efficiently. You are given nine rocks, one of which is heavier, and you must determine which rock is heavier using only two weighings. The task involves designing, testing, and justifying a strategy that guarantees success in all cases, explaining why it works, and reflecting on why two weighings are optimal. My team decided to extend the idea to explore general limits of balance-scale problems and optimal strategies for finding extreme values (heaviest/lightest) among many objects.
