Math Modeling

Math Modeling is a unique class taught by Ms. Durost. Math does not follow a strict curriculum like a pre-calc class, for example, would. We learn various topics such as number theory, AP Stats, actuarial science, algebra II, and geometry so far. In addition to class we all also participate in many math competitions such as HiMCM, NEML, MTFC, and Math Olympiad. Scroll down to see a description of MTFC and HiMCM.

MTFC

MTFC (Modelling The Future Challenge) is a competition we do in groups of 4-5 that aims to model a problem of our choosing using actuarial science. Our group is focusing on muscle atrophy. This is the project proposal we made during the initial phase of the competition.

HiMCM

HiMCM (High school Mathematical Contest in Modeling) was a math competition we did over the span of about 50 hours in November in groups of 3-4. We got multiple school days and had to work on it outside of school as well with many students opting for sleepovers. I enjoyed it even though it was stressful because it allowed us to spend a lot of time together collaborating. The results are released in February. This was the practice version my group and I did for class with a question on developing an objective roller coaster ranking system.

Stats Assignment

Students who have already taken AP Stats have the option to work together during the stats unit on a new topic, then teach it to the class. Isaac and I had to learn about ANOVA testing and teach our group about what it is and how to use it. This was our slideshow we used for all our information.
