Hello everyone! My name is Jack Thompson, and I am currently a junior at the Mass Academy of Math and Science. I have lived in Sutton for most of my life, and before coming here I attended Sutton High School. I live with my parents, brother, dog Amanda, cats Zelda and Jaspers, and my betta fish, Barry. I love my friends, crocheting, and my favorite book is the Perks of Being a Wallflower.
One thing I love is trying new things. At Sutton, I was a part of the FRC team, pep/jazz band, National Honors Society, theatre club (as tech), BVCCB (Blackstone Valley Community Concert Band), track, and some other things. When I was in 7th grade, I joined my school's FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) Team 8544 or "Reinforcement", and it quickly became a big part of my life. It was a very large time commitment, but the friends and memories I made along the way made it worth it. I was a team captain and led the programming/electrical subteam for a year, and before that, I did mechanical for three years. I think it is an awesome program and being on a small team really allowed me to try everything there was. Competitions are the best part of robotics; they are weekend-long events where we get to put our robot to the test with other teams. Last year, my team won our first competition ever at the UVM (University of Vermont) event! I also did a lot of volunteering for robotics at FLL (FIRST Lego League) competitions and outreach events. It's very fun, and of course, getting community service hours is nice if you need them. Obviously I was sad to leave my team, but luckily I joined 190 here at Mass Academy. I have also been happy to join the math team, Red Cross club, and physics club so far.
Music has always been a big part of my life since I joined the band as a percussionist in 5th grade. Although I played trombone for pep and jazz band, percussion remained my main instrument. I absolutely love to learn different instruments and can play almost all of the common ones, and the accordion. Here is a link to a performance I was in playing percussion! I’m the taller one in the back with short hair: Here. The community band was super fun because I got to play more advanced music, since the group was mainly adults. However, because of the schedule of Mass Academy and not attending Sutton, I had to quit most of my music groups. However, I got to join the WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) Concert Band here and still play at home quite a bit. WPI Band is fun and challenging because I get to play with mainly college students. Performance isn’t all I do, I love to listen to music too. Some of my favorites are Cap'n Jazz, Chinatown by Jets to Brazil, Pierce the Veil, Simon and Garfunkel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, and so much more! Please follow me on Spotify Here!
Outside of those I love to bake, create art, walk, and be outside. I really love to crochet in my free time. I learned to crochet in 4th grade and have been doing it on and off when I have time since then. This summer I made a bunch of things including this couch for my cats (which they love). In September I went to a Marietta concert for their reunion, it was really cool to see the band and openers perform in a much smaller venue than I am used to. Even though I have only been to four concerts I would say I enjoy them. I also went to a Weezer concert here in Worcester in 2023, and two Pierce the Veil concerts. I am a big lover of nature, I think being outside is the most at peace I can be. I like to take photos when I'm in the woods like the one below, I also press flowers in a journal then tape them down so they stay permanent.
