Foot edema is a common yet often overlooked issue that affects individuals across many age groups, particularly older adults, individuals with obesity, and those with circulatory challenges. While mild swelling may seem harmless, repeated or prolonged edema can lead to discomfort, reduced stability, increased fatigue, and a higher risk of injury. As rates of obesity and sedentary lifestyles continue to rise, the number of people experiencing activity-induced foot strain is likely to increase as well. This project is significant because it explores a preventative, design-based solution rather than a purely medical treatment. By integrating fluid chambers into shoe outsoles to redistribute plantar pressure, this research investigates whether footwear itself can reduce high-stress regions that contribute to swelling. If effective, fluid-integrated shoes could improve comfort, mobility, and safety during everyday activities such as standing, walking, and exercising.
