STEM

In STEM, we work on creating real-life Science, Engineering, or Mathematics projects and we go through the entire creation process. In STEM I, we find a problem and create a solution for that problem individually, while in STEM II we work in groups to create a solution for a problem facing a client.

Abstract

Dementia and memory loss patients often get lost inside buildings that they visit frequently because they cannot form memories of the building's layout. This requires a caregiver or another person to help them navigate. The goal of the project is to create an app with Android Studio and the Google Maps API which can lead an individual through a building independently. The user’s indoor location is calculated using WiFi RTT compatible routers, with a theoretical accuracy of 1-2 meters in indoor spaces. An experiment was completed to determine how many routers would be needed for effective positioning. Three Access Points were three minimum needed to cover the entire floor, and additional routers were placed in the location that would most benefit the accuracy of the application. From the experiment, there was around a 17% increase in accuracy between 3 and 4 Access Points, while only a 0.3% increase in accuracy between 4 and 5 Access Points. These results show that in addition to the minimum amount of Access Points needed, additional Access Points should be placed in locations where radio signals would not reach effectively. This allows the application, which is calculating the user’s position as they move through the building, to accurately determine the user’s position and lead them to their end destination. As WiFi RTT Router improves and becomes more common in homes and buildings, this application will become an effective way to improve the lives memory loss patients and their caregivers.

Phrase 2

The aim of this project is to engineer an app and/or a small device that can effectively and reliably lead someone with memory loss through a building without the need for a caregiver to help them.

Phrase 1

Dementia and memory loss patients can get lost inside buildings that they visit frequently because they cannot form memories of the building's layout. This requires a caregiver or another person to help them navigate at all times.
