Humanities at Mass Academy is taught by Ms.Small and includes social studies, philosophy and a lot of writing. We begin the year by reading "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau, a classic that all students at MAMS bond over. Additionally, this class focuses on timed writing and group discussions as we delve into topics of education, identity, race and many more.
In humanities, the first essay that we wrote was the education essay. We had free choice to decide on a topic that is related to the education system. Therefore, the prompt I decided to write about was "To what extent does the amount and type of homework given develop students’ independent study skills and impact their health?".
We ended the satire unit by writing a satire essay about the topic of our choice. Since we read Jonathan Swift's "Modest Proposal" and Neil Gaiman's "Babycakes" in class, I decided to write a satirical analysis regarding how both authors effectively utilize various satirical strategies to convey their messages to the audience. Some of the satirial devices they used were reduction, imagery, irony, parallelism etc.
