About FIRST

Founded by Dean Kamen in 1992, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) has set out to shape the next generation of thinkers by providing a hands-on and challenging application that makes math and science engaging. Beginning with the FIRST Robotics Competitions (FRC), which is targeted for high school students (ages 14-18); the effort has expanded t o include FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) and FIRST Lego League (FLL), involving students as young as 6 years old. The FRC continues to grow, comprising over 2,300 teams and 58,000 students. Within the six-week build season, teams design, manufacture, and program a 150 lb robot to compete in the assigned game. There are 52 regional events internationally with plenty other tournaments, culminating in the world championship held at the FIRST Championship in St. Louis, MO. Promoting the principle of Gracious Professionalism, FIRST prepares students for success in college and any future endeavor they encounter. In addition, the scholarships available to student participants accumulate to 1.4 million dollars and come from 147 different providers.
