Events at WPI
Every year, WPI hosts a number of robotics events on its campus, and both the high school members and college mentors of the team are actively involved. Specifically, these events are the WPI Regional, BattleCry, Savage Soccer, and Robonautica. Each event provides team members with the opportunity to have fun battling it out on field or volunteer to help run the show.
The WPI Regional is an FRC regional competition that hosts 36 teams in the on campus during a March Break. This event is one of the most diverse regionals in FIRST, with teams hailing from Brazil, Hawaii, and the United Kingdom. Team 190 members and mentors have competed in the event since its inception in 2010.
In May, WPI hosts its annual offseason event, BattleCry. Beginning in 2000 as a way for teams to play one more time with their robots, BattleCry has grown to 48 teams and has become known as “the best off-season event in FIRST.” Team 190 allows the high school and one college member to run the team, while the rest of the team volunteers for the event.
Savage Soccer is a robotics competition that began in 1995 at WPI, and has been by college students ever since. Modeled after the First Robotics Competition program, every year, a game is chosen and teams have four weeks to brainstorm, design, and build a robot using Vex robotics parts. At the end of this timeframe, teams convene on the WPI campus to compete at the official Savage Soccer competition. Every year, Team 190 college mentors help design the game and volunteer to run the tournament, and the high school members form several teams that will compete.
Finally, Robonautica is the FLL championship for the state of Massachusetts. Each December, 72 FLL teams fill the Harrington Auditorium and compete for an invitation to the international competition. Team 190 and other local teams frequently volunteer to run the event.
