Math Modeling is taught by Mrs. Burns. In this class, we focus on using math in real-world applications. Topics such as modular arithmetic and statistics are covered, and we often have presentations on solutions to different homework problems. We also take part in different competitions, such as the Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC) and the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM).
For one of our assignments, we developed a way to find the day of the week that someone's birthday was on, given that they gave information about when their birthday was. Using only a calendar and a given list about a few historical figures' birthdays, our group of me, Shaurya, and Nick came up with a solution. As an extension, we also made a program that only required a user input of their birthday, and the output would be the day of the week that their birthday was on.
Another modeling project we did involved Epsilon School, which was getting an additional 140 students in its new class. With seven available hires for teachers and info about the previous year's enrollment and teacher distribution, Rishi, Keira, and I devised a solution for this problem and presented it to the class. Everyone had the same problem, but we all had different solutions and different ways to approach the problem when we all presented.
