Within class discussion and debate are commonplace, as students refine their critical thinking, debate, and public speaking skills. It is heavily writing-focused, with students writing essays, opinion pieces, and argumentative pieces honing their writing and editing skills.

Walden Skit

The Walden Skit assignment was a group project where I worked with in a group of 4 to create a skit that satirizes Henry David Thoreau’s book Walden and the ideals seen within the book. We ended up acting these plays out in front of the class and got to see a lot of funny skits from other groups. Our skit was about what if Henry David Thoreau went into the clergy and all the terrible advice he’d give to parishioners.

Satirical Analysis Essay

The Satirical Analysis Essay was an assignment where students were allowed to pick a satire of their choice and write an in-depth analysis of the piece. I personally chose the SNL skit “Matt Foley: Van Down By The River” where we follow a motivational speaker as he attempts to convince two teens that drugs are bad and would result in them living, “down by the river.” but in the end his ridiculous antics would lead him nowhere.
