Hello, my name is Charles Shi. I am currently a junior at Mass Academy of Math and Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). My sending school is Shrewsbury High School.
For the past 2 years, I have regularly worked at the Kumon Learning Center in Shrewsbury. In this role, I assist with grading student assignments, determining students’ workloads based on their progress, and providing one-on-one support to students who have questions or need additional help with their work. This experience has allowed me to develop strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly.
I also work in marketing for an esports organization called Trinity Network, formerly known as WarSeekers, where I help promote the brand, design and create products, and support community engagement.
This year, I joined the Math Team at the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science, where we regularly meet to solve challenging mathematical problems. We compete in the Worcester County Mathematics League or WOCOMAL.
During B Term I joined the Physics Club which met after schools to learn new physics concepts. On top of this, the club helped with practice questions from the F = ma exam that were on the same topics as those that we were covering in class. In one of our meetings, we were able to tour two physics labs on WPI campus.
I also joined CyberPatriot, which is a cybersecurity competition ran by the Air & Space Forces Association where teams work to secure and harden virtual operating systems by identifying vulnerabilities, configuring system settings, and following security best practices. The team that I was a part of was able to qualify for the Gold Tier’s Semifinals Round and got the 1st Place Gold Tier Award for Massachusetts.
During my sophomore year, I was actively involved in community outreach through the Chemistry Club at Shrewsbury High School. As part of our initiative, we visited local elementary schools to hold engaging, hands-on chemistry experiments with fourth-grade students. Our goal was to spark curiosity and foster an early interest in science by making chemistry fun, accessible, and interactive. Some of the events I helped run included having the children create slime, having them make and use invisible ink, and having them color bookmarks using shaving cream.
Over the summer, I volunteered at Sherwood Middle School, assisting with their summer enrichment programs. During a two-week span, I helped supervise students and supported teachers by preparing materials, setting up activities, and offering help during instruction. I was involved in four different enrichment camps, each running for four days with three-hour sessions. In one camp, I helped students design and create their own board games; in another, I assisted in teaching them how to crochet. I also participated in a competition-based camp where I served as a judge and scorekeeper, and in a public speaking camp, I supported students by offering examples and guidance on both prepared and impromptu speeches.
During Spring Break, I traveled to France and visited iconic sites like the Eiffel Tower, Palace of Versailles, and several museums. At the Louvre, I saw the Venus de Milo and Winged Victory of Samothrace; at Musée Rodin, The Thinker; and at L’Orangerie, Monet’s Water Lilies. I also toured historic churches such as Notre-Dame, Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, and the stunning Sainte-Chapelle with its vibrant stained glass windows.
Over the summer I went to Washington. I walked around Seattle, visiting the Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass, and Pike Place Market. We also took trips outside the city to Leavenworth’s Bavarian village, Mount Rainier National Park, and unique spots like the Ballard Locks Fish Ladder and the Fremont Troll.
For the past few years, I have been actively playing Clash Royale, maintaining two accounts: one with 10,500 trophies and another with 12,000 trophies free to play. I have reached Ultimate Champion (the highest rank) and achieved a peak rating of 2,190 medals, placing me in the top 250 on Asian servers. Additionally, I help manage "The Sweaters," a Clan Wars clan that’s top 150 in the world and #13 in the U.S. where I oversee participant selection and handle strategic calculations during Clan Wars.
In Minecraft, I play Hypixel Skyblock, a role playing game focused on resource gathering, skill leveling, and economy. I’m ranked in the top 3,000 out of 20 million for Skyblock Level, which measures overall game completion, and hold multiple leaderboard positions within the top 500. Additionally, I’m a long-standing member of a top 30 Skyblock guild, where I assist with management and contribute new ideas. Profile.
A couple of these leaderboard positions are shown below:
