STEM 2, taught by Dr. Crowthers!
Course Description
STEM 2 is focused on group assistive technology projects, where we design devices to help individuals with disabilities. For my group's project, we focused on creating makeup brushes for those with arthritis or visual impairments. The problems we targeted are individuals with arthritis having difficulty grasping small items, such as makeup brushes, and those with visual impairments having difficulty telling which brush they are using. To combat this, we designed a squishy, hourglass-shaped makeup handle with braille on it. We also designed it to fit with interchangeable brush heads in order to make the products cost-effective and efficient. To come up with these designs, we reached out to individuals with arthritis and visual impairments, and gained insight into what the main struggles are when applying makeup for individuals with those disabilities. We used this information and background research to develop prototypes. The poster from the Assistive Technology Fair is below!
