Course Description

Humanities is taught by Ms. Small and combines typical History and English coursework into one class. This arrangement allows us to explore central themes of education, language, history, culture, and satire, all while seeking to answer the central question: What makes us human?

School Design Assignment

During one of the first units of humanities, we were tasked with designing our own school with our own rules and themes. I worked with Isaac, Corey, and Ryan. Our school was called Future Ready Institute, a vocational technical school whose mission is to dedicated to preparing students for life beyond graduation by combining strong academics with real-world experience. Through this assignment, we learned a lot about designing schools and the factors that go into creating a positive learning environment.

Timed Write

One of the first major assignments in humanities was a timed write, where we had to write an essay in response to a prompt within a limited time frame. This exercise helped us develop our writing skills and ability to think critically under pressure. In this timed write, I wrote about Gandhi's letter to Lord Irwin, and how he uses satirical devices to convey the need for India's freedom. and I explored themes of empathy, satire, and the art of persuasion in my response.

Walden Skit

After having to read Walden during the summer, I, along witt Richy, Charles, and Saanvi, had to create a skit specific to Walden and the main themes. We chose to focus on main character Henry David Thoreau's hypocrisy and how he claims to be living a simple life in nature, but in reality, he is still dependent on society for many things. Through this skit, we were able to explore these themes of Walden in a creative and engaging way.

Satirical Analysis

One of the major units in humanities involved studying satire and its various forms. For this assignment, we could analyze a piece of our own or a piece that was discussed in class. I chose to analyze Jonathon Swift's "A Modest Proposal," a satirical essay that suggests the eating of Irish babies as a solution to poverty. He appeals to logos, uses dark language, and uses irony to characterize characterize not only Ireland’s economic inequality but to also characterize society as ruthless to comment on Ireland’s lack of moral conscience when making sensitive social decisions during adversity.
