In Humanities, we study what it means to be human. This covers a broad range of subjects such as English and History. We read texts, discuss in groups, and write essays.
In A Term, our main unit in Humanities was education. We learned about how education progressed in America and and we discussed different systems of education, as well as the ideal public education system. This unit culminated in writing an essay on a topic of choice, focusing on current issues in education. I wrote a completely unbiased essay on standardized testing in the college admissions scene and whether it should stay around or not. This process went well and the main feedback I received was to include more background information in the introduction. Either way, I enjoyed writing this essay because it was a topic I was passionate about.
In B Term, we focused on language, moving to rhetoric and satire. We read and analyzed various satirical pieces and found what made a satire effective. Afterwards, we made an original satire with a classmate on a topic of our choice. At the end of the unit, we had to choose a satire either from class or outside of class, and then write an essay on it. I chose a YouTube video from The Babylon Bee and analyzed why it would not be very effective. In this essay, I made sure to include enough context in the introduction while maintaining strong logic in the body of the essay. I enjoyed writing this essay because it was also about an internesting topic.
