Humanities

Humanities, taught by Ms. Small, is a combination of History and English, and we explore units by analyzing text, writing essays, and holding class discussions. Some units we’ve covered so far are education, rhetoric, and satire. We also complete biweekly journals reflecting on current news and our experience at MAMS. Humanities incorporates a lot of freedom and creativity, as we often do projects and choose our own essay prompts. Check out some of my writing below!

One of our first units in Humanities was education, where we wrote a synthesis essay on a prompt of our own choosing about the education system. I chose to explore the question “To what extent should AI be allowed in schools, for students?” I researched various opinion pieces, articles, and studies to construct my argument that students should be able to use AI outside of class, but not during school.

Our next unit in Humanities focused on rhetoric, exploring rhetorical appeals, logical fallacies, and rhetorical devices. We wrote an analysis essay exploring how devices are used in writing to convey a message. I chose to write about Reshma Saujani’s piece in American Like Me: Reflections on Life between Cultures.
