Math Modeling is a course taught by Mrs. Burns, and this math course isn't your traditional course. Instead of learning math concepts through memorization and traditional methods, we learn math concepts through hands-on discovery and apply the things we learn to real-life situations. Throughout the year, we also participate in various math competitions such as NEML (New English Math League), MTFC (Modeling the future Challenge), and HiMCM (High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling).
One of the first things that we did in this class was a presentation on the Epsilon School problem. As part of this problem, we were tasked with figuring out which departments the new teachers hired at Epsilon School should go. The pdf on the right is the presentation that my group made to answer this problem.
Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC) is one of the many math modeling competitions that we participate in. In this challenge, we have to work with our team to mathematically model a mitigation strategy for a risk. My team consisted of Me, Hasini, Avani, Anika, and Ishana. Together, we are trying to model a mitigation strategy for suicide in teens caused by excessive use of social media. You can take a look at our current project proposal on the left!
