Humanities, often called "Hum", is a combination of classes such as English, history, psychology, sociology, art, among others, taught by Ms. Small. Through reading, analyzing, and discussing various texts, we have covered topics ranging from education to satires to the concept of race.
In our education unit, we explored what a potential ideal education system would look like and got to choose our own education-related topic of interest to research and write a synthesis essay on. A synthesis essay is essentially an essay that uses its sources and builds upon them, aiming to create a conversation between the different sources. I chose the topic of Advanced Placement (AP) tests because in the past I have taken a few APs, and they often felt like they were measuring one's ability to take the test rather than mastery of content, leading me to question the validity of AP exams and search for potential solutions to perceived drawbacks to the AP system. For the satirical analysis essay, we were also allowed to chose the satire we wanted to analyze. I wanted to analyze a video from Saturday Night Live, and after I found and watched the video "Bald Guys", I was set on writing about its absurd yet ultimately ineffective way of arguing its case.
