Course Description
Spanish is taught by Señora Wildfong and is considered an immersive language class because it is taught completely in Spanish and through several mediums, such as books, TV shows, cooking recipes, board games, and music. From watching El Internado, a Spanish drama series, to listening to “El Mismo Sol” (Under The Same Sun), to watching Viva Cuba, a 2005 Cuban film, Spanish is one of my favorite classes.
“Why Learn A Second Language?” Reflection
Our first Spanish assignment, and only English one, of the school year was to write a short reflection (left) on Tamim Ansary’s “Why Learn a Second Language?”. I found this piece to be very interesting and a good way to start the academic year. I deeply related to Ansary’s argument that many languages have expressions that cannot be translated. Several words in Tamil have nonsensical direct translations and can’t be truly understood without cultural context. Click here if you are having trouble viewing it!
Cuando era niña
To solidify our understanding of the imperfect and preterite tenses, we each wrote an essay (right) about a story from our childhood. I chose to write about a time when I was playing tennis with my sister and our neighborhood friends, but I fell face flat on the pavement. My anecdote ends with me describing the joy I felt when one of my neighbors brought a lion-shaped ice pack for me and the pride I felt when I showed off all my scrapes and bruises the next day in kindergarten.
