Mathematical Modeling with Mrs. Durost is not a typical high school math class. Instead of learning concepts in isolation, students discover them through patterns and exploration. The course emphasizes applying mathematics to real-world scenarios and meaningful problems. Throughout the year, students also participate in math competitions such as the Modeling the Future Challenge, High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling, and the New England Math League, adding a collaborative and challenging dimension to the course. Below you can find some of our modelling work.
The Modelling the Future Contest (MTFC) is a high school competition
that asks studnets to researc, obtain data, create mathematical
models, and give recommendations based on these models. For our
project, my group has been looking at how drug addicition is related
to surgery rates and opiod prescriptions. On the right is our

This was one of our first modelling assignments. A school's freshman
population is doubling next year. Based on previous enrollment rates
and dropout rates, we have to decide which deparments should get
teachers.
