I was born in Westborough and I lived there until I was in second grade before moving to my forever home in Grafton! My family consists of my mom, my dad, and my brother, Ian. Some of the things we love doing together are watching movies, traveling, and playing board games. Personally, some of my favorite movies and TV shows are Harry Potter, Avatar: the Last Airbender, Anne with an E, Sorry for Your Loss, Abbott Elementary, and anything Marvel-related. I have a passion in biochemistry and I'm beyond grateful for this opportunity to attend Mass Academy! Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of school are golf, archery, listening to music, and giving back to my community. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at ochoi@wpi.edu! Music truly has a special place in my heart. I’ve been performing and listening to music ever since I can remember. Some of my favorite artists include Ariana Grande, Lizzy McAlpine, Clairo, and Charlie Puth. Feel free to follow my Spotify account here!
For around eight years, I’ve been a singer at a performing arts group in Boston called the Handel and Haydn Society, specifically their Youth Choruses (HHYC), where singers across all ages come together every Saturday to practice our repertoire. It's one of my favorite places and it's filled with the best people. The singers there are always so welcoming and kind to new singers, regardless of past experience. I've performed at Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, Roxbury Community College, and more! Due to my long time and experience at HHYC, I’ve become an ambassador for the choir! It’s been an absolute privilege to work with everyone and it’s something I love to do.
I was also a part of my school’s theatre! During my freshman year we performed Bye, Bye, Birdie, and it was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done in high school. The community at Grafton's theatre was so incredible and I’m so grateful to have been a part of a wonderful production. I made so many great friends there and it definitely fueled my love for music as well.
A very significant aspect of my life is golf. My dad was the first person that encouraged me to play golf, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It's one of the first things that gave me a competitive mindset because of how passionate I am for it. I began golfing halfway through middle school, and I truly fell in love with the game. I love watching it, playing with friends and family, and talking about it. It's one of my favorite hobbies, and all my practice allowed me to play on Grafton High School’s Varsity Golf Team for freshman and sophomore year as the only girl on the team, and allowed me to receive a rising star award sophomore year.
One of my absolute favorite activities I love doing outside is archery. It’s an activity that I’ve been teaching myself, and I absolutely adore it. I’ve been shooting arrows all summer, and it allows me to decompress and have fun after a long school day. If I've been inside for the entire day and I need to go outside, archery is the one thing that I always go to in order to relax. I have a takedown recurve bow and I use carbon arrows that are around 29 inches. I’m a huge Marvel lover, so this definitely added to my love for the game.
One of the volunteer jobs that gave me the greatest number of hours is working at my local animal shelter, a no-kill, all-cat shelter. I’m in charge of taking care of the feral rooms there, and I clean and refill the litter boxes, food bowls, and water bowls. I’ve gathered around 100 hours volunteering there for around two and a half years now, and the reason why I chose to volunteer there every Sunday morning is because they deserve to be treated the way we want to be treated, too. They’re the sweetest cats in the world, and they’ve definitely convinced me to transition from a dog person to more of a cat person.
Another community service job I’ve done is volunteer for a Special Olympics softball game at Dean Park. I was in charge of ruling and making judgement calls for the out's and safe's, counting score of the game, and delivering the official score on paper after every game. I got around 7 hours for my work, and the players there are some of the sweetest and funniest people I’ve ever met.
