Math Modeling

Course Description

In this course, we learn about different mathematical concepts and learn to take on problems in creative ways. We have covered a range of topics so far, from number theory to statistics. We also participate in different competitions, such as Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC), High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM), and New England Math League (NEML).

Birthday POW

Every few weeks, we get a Problem of the Week to work on with our table groups. This problem addressed finding the day of the week given a date of birth. However, the mathematical process needed to be simplified into a set of instructions that someone without a math background could follow. We used modular arithmetic to come up with a process, which is linked below. I enjoyed working on this problem because it was challenging as well as fun to figure out. Modeling the Future Challenge

Modeling the Future Challenge, or MTFC, is a math modeling competition that gives high school students insight into the actuarial process. We started working on this project in October, and are continuing to work on it. Our team chose to focus on wrongful convictions, as it is a prominent social justice issue that impacts many people.
