Humanities is a class taught by Mrs. Small where students explore various topics through readings, discussion, and writing. Over the summer, students read Thoreau's Walden, journal about their impressions, and perform skits based on the book. Students also read chapters of Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari and and satirical pieces such as "A Modest Proposal" by Johnathan Swift.
The Education Essay was the first essay we wrote this year in
Humanities. We did a lot of reading leading up to this essay on
the history of education and then brainstormed our own topics and
prompts to answer. I decided to write my essay about standardized
testing and the college admissions process, focusing primarily on
the SAT, as there have been many recent developments surrounding
testing policies post-pandemic. Check out my complete essay over

The Satirical Analysis essay came after our unit on rhetoric and
satire. We read pieces such as Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest
Proposal” and Neil Gaiman’s “Babycakes” leading up to writing.
The prompt I chose was comparing the effectiveness of two pieces:
one satirical and one serious. I found a piece from The
Onion about Taylor Swift and her carbon footprint for the
satirical piece and one from BBC
News for the serious piece. Check out my complete essay over
