Taught by Mrs. Burns, Math Modeling is a unique experience for all students at Mass Academy. Regardless of one’s background (Ranging from students who have taken Algebra II to AP Calculus BC), Mrs. Burns develops a curriculum which is meant to bolster the understanding of all her students. Through participating in challenge problems at the start of class, weekly problems to consider different applications, and making connections between different fields within math, we have been truly able to view math from a different perspective. Currently, we continue some of our long-term math projects such at MTFC while simultaneously developing our unique way to solve geometric problems.
MTFC is a prestigious competition organized by the Actuarial Foundation. Annually, a specific technology topic is chosen, and students are tasked with creating and presenting their mathematical models outlining their predictions on how the emerging technology or industry will impact the future. The scenario phase (first phase of the competition) includes statistics and probability, risk analysis and projecting trends.
For this project, Mrs. Burns tasked us to create a method to develop a system for finding out the day of the week on which someone was born based on the date when the person was born. We were also restricted to only use the calendar of the current month and the 4 basic mathematical operations. Our goal was to make a simple enough guide that even a 5th grader could follow. To expand on our guide, we created an algorithm that gives out the day of the week when the date is entered.
Find out what day of the week you were born on!
