I have sung in a choir for most of my life. My most significant choral experience has been in the Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC). I have been a member of BCC for 7 years. Throughout my time at the choir, I have learned about social justice and how to advocate for what is right. I have also made many lifelong friends, traveled internationally with the choir, and had a leadership role. Unfortunately, I am not able to fit BCC into my schedule at the current time, so I am not enrolled for this year. However, I do plan on continuing my singing journey in the WPI Glee Club and possibly through appearances as an “alumnus” at some BCC concerts.
Throughout my childhood I have had an interest in computers. I have taken apart multiple phones, laptops, and built my own computer. I love the sense of ownership that comes from having gone into a device and done something that now makes it specifically yours. I also have dabbled into HTML, Scratch, and p5.Js. (Here is a website I created!) I also will learn how to code using Java this year in CS. I also am participating in the CAD extracurricular so I can learn how to 3D Model, a valuable skill for a potential engineering career.
I joined Wachusett Regional High School’s math team as a freshman. As a member of the team I competed in Worcester County Math League (WOCOMAL) meets. Through my experience in that club I have learned of the vast complexity and difficulty that math can provide, and I find that humbling. I also have found the sportsmanship at WOCOMAL meets to be at the core of the team, both between team members and people from different schools. I look forward to delving into more difficult math as a member of the Mass Academy Math Team.
Ever since I was a kid, I have loved to play chess. Last year I dived back into the hobby on chess.com and was able to hit 1000 ELO. I love how the game may seem simple from the outside but is actually a very complex art of deciphering shifting positions and gaining major or miniscule advantages over the opponent.
A good chunk of my community service was done for the school's community service club. Through events such as STEM Saturdays at the Worcester Public Library and Millbury Public Library and the Earth Day Clean Up I have been able to contribute to the community in the areas surrounding Worcester.
As a part of a group of students, I helped lead two STEM lessons for elementary and middle schoolers at the Abby Kelley Foster Charter School. These lessons were about spool racers and their connections to energy and bird beak adaptations.
As a tutor for the Latino Education Institute's ISLA (Innovative Services for Latino Achievers) program I have been able to aid students from first through sixth grade in their learning and understanding of mathematical topics and reading ability.
I live with my mom, dad, and older sister. My mom is from Puerto Rico and my dad is from New Jersey. We have one dog, Josie. We all woof her so much.
