ABOUT
Mathematical Modeling is a class that, like most MAMS courses,
incorporates a lot of project-based learning. I usually explain mathematical modeling as
advanced word problems. Scroll down to see some examples of my work in this class.
POW #1: HAPPY BIRTHDAY
This is an assignment from earlier this year. POW stands for problem
of the week, but we don't have one every week. In this problem, I worked with
Nick Giza,
Kayla Vallecillo, and
Lindsey Paradise
to find the day of the week on which someone was born. The only information that you need to
have is the person's birthday and what age they're turning/turned this year. Feel free to
test it on yourself by clicking here!
MODELING THE FUTURE
There are many mathematical competitions included in Mathematical
Modeling at MAMS. One of them is the Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC). This is an actuarial
competition where students form teams to learn how to approach problems like actuaries through
a project of the team's choosing. I am on a team with Sasha Nandyala,
Claire Newcom,
Keira Reid, and
Sami Wang.
Our team is called Love Actuary, and we decided to model the risk of depression. You can read
more about our approach and some of the practice problems that we did in this
document. Our team, along with all of the other Mass Academy teams, was selected to compete
in the next round.
