Me working on my 3D printer

3D PRINTING

I first got into 3D printing around the end of eighth grade. I started looking into it when I needed a part for a small helicopter I built in one of my classes (thank you, Ms. Dwyer!) and after about half of a year of research, I was building a 3D printer! I ended up building a Voron 0.1. Voron is a company that creates 3D printers and releases the manuals and bills of materials (BOMs) for building them. It is still challenging to build one of their printers, but building one will teach you a lot about how your printer works and you can learn skills like working with Raspberry Pis, reading wiring diagrams, and using hand tools. It's a very valuable and rewarding hobby. Here's a link to their website!

ANCIENT ROME

I've been interested in the ancient world since I read the Percy Jackson books in fifth grade. That spiraled into reading The Iliad in seventh grade, and eventually an interest in the history of ancient Rome. My personal favorite emperor is Diocletian. I think that his rule is really satisfying in the context of the entire history of Rome, as the Empire had been in a rocky state for roughly 50 years. He also freely gave up power, which I always enjoy. He also set up the tetrarchy, which was another great part of ancient Rome. Incredible!

Shhhhhhh

If you want to learn about ancient Rome, I'd recommend starting with the Punic Wars and the Battle of Cannae. You might also want to look into the podcast The History of Rome or the book Mortal Republic: How Rome Fell Into Tyranny by Edward J. Watts.

MUSIC

I've played the flute for about seven years and the piano for about four. I currently play flute in the WPI band. The WPI band definitely plays more difficult music than my sending school, but I think that it's also more fun to play and am excited to start working on our C term concert.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

In the spring, I like to help with my local elementary school's school musical. I started in my freshman year because I stage managed the shows at my sending school. It's one of my favorite parts of the year because I love seeing kids develop a passion for theater and put on a genuinely good show.

Keep scrolling, there's some good stuff down there!

In the winter and a bit into the spring, I run a local elementary and middle school chess club with my dad. I help with recording games, instructing members, and (most importantly), putting out snacks. I also sort all of the pieces at least once a year and help with the tournament.

READING

The hobby that I have the most time for is reading. I have been reading about one book every week and a half this year. I've put a carousel of books that I've read this year right to the right of this text.

A Prayer for Owen Meany
This was the first and best book that I've read this year. It's funny, it's heartbreaking, and it takes place right over the border in New Hampshire.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
I love this book, I was actually re-reading it, but I'm still going to count it. It's very funny and one of my original favorite books.
Flowers for Algernon
This book was good, but a bit overrated. It's short and sad. It's not by any stretch the best book I've ever read, but I'm glad that I did.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
I wanted so badly to like this book, but I felt like parts of it dragged a bit. There are parts of this book that make reading it more than worth it, but it's not the first book that I would recommend.
The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
I loved this book! It was an interesting exploration of the impact of Trujillo's reign in the Dominican Republic and the characters were incredible.
Of Mice and Men
This book was great, everyone should read it, and so on. I was finishing this book when my dad (who lent me the book) picked me up and I asked to finish the last few pages in the car next to him. He later said it was one of the best questions he's ever heard.
How High We Go in the Dark
Reading this book truly does feel like experiencing a tragedy. The beginning is full of these incredible, creative plague stories (I can never ride a roller coaster again after reading this), but then it just starts getting worse.
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
I despise this book and don't know why I keep trying to like it. This was the third time that I've read it (first time all the way through) and I never like it. It was okay in that I had something to read, but I generally don't like romance books and this was just too much for me. It was like reading an alternate, worse version of A Man Called Ove.

OTHER INTERESTS

I'm also interested in the DGT chessboard I'm building with my dad and uncle, my sending school's yearbook, knitting and crocheting, lockpicking, the band They Might Be Giants, juggling, LEGO, and I'm learning Klingon.
