Humanities, or HUM for short, is a class taught by Ms. Small. In Humanities, we write essays, hold class discussions, analyze literature, and perform plays. Our Humanities class covers History and Sociology, along with the typical English class curriculum.
The first essay I wrote was an opinion piece on the American educational system. I chose to argue that the benefit of social cohesion created by nationalistic practices, specifically the Pledge of Allegiance, was outweighed by the division it created. I found preexisting opinion pieces by students, teachers, parents, and supreme court justices to develop both sides of the argument and convince the author that the Pledge of Allegiance was a net negative.
Another assignment I worked on for Humanities was a Walden skit. After reading Henry David Throeau's book, Walden, we were given the opportunity to write and perform a skit. Our group chose to make a Family-Feud-style Game Show called Bean Brawl, in which we satirized Thoreau's way of thinking.
