MA3457/CS4033 Projects Instructions |
---|
Basics |
---|
In these Mini-Projects, you will demonstrate your knowledge of/experience with the major topics of the course. It is recommended that you start working on the project as soon as corresponding material is addressed in the lectures.
Report |
---|
...should be compact and concise, and yet include sufficiently detailed presentation of your solutions of the project problems.
Each assignment will include one or two problems (whose statements will appear on the Mini Projects page) as well as one problem chosen by yourself in accordance with your professional interest, topics of your major, etc. The latter problem should be about some application. (If you are a math major interested in theoretical/abstract things, please do your best in finding an appropriate problem associated with applied mathematics.) Make sure that measured (or numerically computed) data used as the input is plausible and this data is borrowed from a reasonable/reliable source; however, if the data is not available, the values for the database to use could be invented.
Presentation of each problem in the Report should be structured in the same mode including the following points:
Incorporate graphs/illustrations, pieces of MATLAB scripts composed especially for these problems, and other related supportive materials. Be overall creative!
On a Project Day, bring a printed report on your Mini-Project to the class and hand it over the TA.
Short Presentation |
---|
...of the problem proposed for the Mini-Project will be given in class on a Project Day. The presentation should include two slides (YES, NO MORE!) containing very compact (but sufficient for making it clear) information about your problem:
You'll be expected to fully make this presentation (including answering short quick questions) for 120-150 sec (2-2.5 minute maximum), so plan the actual talk for 80-100 sec - avoid long sentences and secondary-value details, make it well condensed, etc.
Make the whole thing understandable to "strangers", i.e., to your classmates majoring in other disciplines. Prepare your speech; do not rely on improvising; rather, get ready good statements in advance. Remember that the quality of your presentation will be evaluated and graded.
IMPORTANT: Rational use of time is imperative in this situation, so your slides should be e-mailed to the TA in advance - by 12 noon on the Project Day. The TA will compile the slides in one PPT file and upload it to the classroom's computer. Slides not arrived by the deadline will not be included in the presentation file and the presentation will get no credit.
Out of 16 project teams in the class, only 8 will be randomly called for presentations on each Project Day; we'll be aiming to complete all of them within 25 min. This means that each team will prepare its slides for all four projects, but give presentations only twice.
