There are numerous diseases that could potentially be cured through the simple approach of regenerating damaged tissue. For instance, if teeth could regenerate, common issues like dental pulp necrosis – which affects billions of people worldwide – could be addressed. This project focused on inducing tissue regeneration through the Wnt signaling pathway, a pathway well-known for its regenerative properties in the liver and teeth. Specifically, the project aimed to modulate the Wnt pathway using basic fibroblast growth factors (bFGF) and lithium chloride in a Schmidtea mediterranea model. In doing so, this project took a significant step toward finding solutions for diseases like dental pulp necrosis and similar conditions that could be cured through regenerating damaged tissue. Below, you’ll find my grant proposal, which outlines my methodology, research background, and the scope of the project. This document contains all the information about the approach I took when testing these molecular signals and their impact on stem cell differentiation.
