Humanities @ MAMS

Humanities is a course taught by Ms. Small, in which we explore what it means to be human. It's very similar to a standard English course, but it also covers a lot of history. Throughout the course of the year, we cover a couple major units, such as education, rhetoric, satire, and identity.

Original Satire

One of the biggest writing assignments that we complete in the year is a satire creative essay, in which we get to work with a partner to write a satire that critiques any topic of our choice. I worked with Ravena to develop a satire that intended to promote a change in the consumerist behaviours of society, and we did so in the form of a news research paper that explored the effects of unlimited social media consumption on gorillas. Walden Skits

Another major creative assignment that we got to work on earlier in the year was our Walden skits, which were largely inspired by any Henry David Thoreau's Walden scene of our choice. We got to develop our own scripts, make our own props, and eventually even act it out at Bournedale. Our skit focused on the ant scene in Walden, in which Thoreau brought in a leaf covered in ants and eagerly watched the ants fight to the death, but it was done in a colosseum instead of Thoreau's hut by Walden pond.
