Overview
Photonics is the study and application of light.
The term can be used to describe old technologies such as light bulbs
and newer ones such as fiber optic communication.
Photonics impact such diverse industries as telecommunications,
consumer electronics, and medical.
The IPG Photonics Laboratory at WPI was conceived by
Professors Lew Yan Voon, Quimby, and Swartzlander
and was made possible by a generous donation from IPG-Photonics of
Oxford, MA.
The primary mission of the lab is to teach students photonics,
with emphasis on fibers, lasers, and detectors.
