Fencing Club Alum:
Scott McKenzie reports in 2009: "I am a graduate of WPI, class of '76, and was in the Fencing Club 1975-76. In fact, I fenced in the New England Championships in sabre my senior year. I won about half my bouts. I am glad to see that the Fencing Club still exists when so much else has changed. I can still remember our roadtrips, we would carry extra gasoline in our car trunks due to the gas shortages. I remember that a female fencer from the '32 Olympics would occasionally come and practice with us..." |

The WPI Fencing Club has been active for over 50 years.
It is open to any WPI student who is interested in Fencing.
- The club normally meets two or three times a week during the terms to practice and fence.
- No experience necessary: Novice Training starts in the Fall (A term).
- Experienced fencers are always welcome.
- All members can register for PE/WPE 1205 credit in A term and in B term. Grades are determined by attendance.
* Better than 60% attendance is needed.
- You do not need to register for PE credit to take part in the club.
- After novice training, members will integrate with the club team and begin weapon training.
- If you are at varsity level you can compete for WPI at collegiate competitions.
- Weapon training available in Foil, Epee and Sabre.
- We can provide equipment, but we encourage you to use yours. Talk to the Coach before buying.
* A complete starter set begins at about $200-300
- A limited amount of equipment storage is available for members who are not permitted to keep their equipment in dorm rooms.
* You can try to request temporary storage from Residential Services when you first move into the dorm, until you can transfer equipment to the club cupboards.
- There is a nominal yearly club membership fee ($20): membership gets you club socks!
- WPI Fencing Club red jackets are available for purchase by members ($35)
- Normal Practice location: Harrington Auditorium.
- For access to Harrington Auditorium please enter through the Recreation Center.
- Please wear gym clothes and non-marking gym shoes: not the same shoes you wear outside. No bare feet, sandals, flip-flops, or regular shoes/boots.
- If you are actually "free fencing" then you must be wearing full fencing gear, and your legs must be covered, preferably by proper fencing pants. i.e., no shorts.
- Everyone attending the Club must register as club members on myWPI.
- Each term you will need to have medical insurance to fence, and a Liability/Insurance form must be completed (find the form associated with 'Club Sports' in myWPI or via the club Slack).
- You must complete the online Concussion course (find the course associated with 'Club Sports' in myWPI or via the club Slack)
- You need to 'check in' at every practice you attend: especially if you are registered for WPE 1205.
- We have matches with other clubs and schools.
- We sometimes take part in the New England Championships, the NE Collegiate Club Championships, the UNH Invitational Multimeet, the UConn, Smith and Mount Holyoke College Invitational events, and The Big One.
- The WPI Fencing Club is a member club of USA Fencing.
USA Fencing Membership is required for sanctioned competitions, such as those at WFC or BFC.
An Access level membership might be OK for you: worth checking.
You do not need it for regular college events. But you will need it to attend Open Fencing at WFC.

We wish to thank Doug Jacobs and Will Darling for their devoted past help as Assistant Coach. The club encourages Fencing Club Alumni to keep in touch and return to fence the current club teams.
An alternative to fencing at WPI is to contact Worcester Fencing Club (WFC) and take a class there.
WPI students are welcome at WFC's Open Fencing evenings.
For those living outside Worcester, consider one of the other great Fencing Clubs in the New England Area.
