math MODELING

Mathematical modeling, taught by Mrs. Burns, focuses on building students’ application of math concepts. Through real-world applications, competitions, homework, and interactive classes, students learn to connect previously learned topics and new topics to solve complex problems. A large portion of the class also consists of creating efficient mathematical models, including MTFC and HiMCM.

HiMCM, or the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling, was the first math contest that I participated in that was long-term. This spanned over 3 days for a total of 50 hours. Our team focused on problem B, researching and creating a model for electric buses in cities and their effect on different environmental factors. The PDF to the left is our team's practice response to problem A from 2018, regarding a ranking system for rollercoasters with a given data set.

MTFC, or the Modeling The Future Challenge, was another math competition that we participated in. It was the first time that MAMS participated in this competition based on actuarial science. My team focused on the topic of risk associated with the Appalachian Trail and the best time to hike it. The PDF to the left is our project proposal for the first phase of the competition.
