WELCOME to Math Modeling taught by Mrs. Durost. In this class, we work through various problem sets covering topics such as number theory, statistics, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry while focusing on collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving. This class is unlike traditional math classes as concepts are discovered through challenging math problems and teamwork instead of typical lectures.
Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC) is an annual math modeling competition that all Mass Academy Juniors participate in. It challenges us to solve real-world problems by thinking as an actuary. My MTFC group includes Rishi, Rohan, Tanay, Arnav, and myself. The first round of the competition is the scenario quest, meaning we must model a question based on a given scenario and complementary data sets. The second round of the competition asks our team to propose our own scenario and model it with “actuarial” thinking.

The High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) is a national competition that challenges teams to apply complex mathematical models to model real problems under limited time constraints. All Mass Academy Juniors participate in the HiMCM math modeling competition. To prepare, we completed a practice HiMCM problem. My group consisted of Corey, Charles, Richy, Emmanuel, and myself. Our problem asked us to model the optimal way to organize a triathlon sporting event.
