I was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Massachusetts when I was four years old. Both my parents are originally from Peru and I grew up fluent in both languages, Spanish and English. I actually did preschool over there!
While my family here is quite small, my family in Peru is the opposite. This summer I was lucky enough to travel there and visit them. Peru is where my entire family is from and I always love going back because it feels like a second home. Peru has amazing cuisine and beautiful countrysides. My favorite memory from this trip was probably getting to ride a horse up the mountainside.
I love being involved in organizations working to achieve a goal. In June of 2023, I was selected to attend the Hugh O’Brian Leadership seminar (HOBY), a three day conference that inspires teens to take action. Through them I’ve had wonderful opportunities to give back, like volunteering to referee games for the Special Olympics and lending a hand to Wildlife conservatories. Along with that, I was an active member of my sending school’s student council and helped run many fundraisers and events for the benefit of students. A highlight of stuco was attending the state-wide MASC conference in Hyannis and getting to know like-minded peers from different areas of Massachusetts.
Something I am very passionate about is traveling. I’ve been super fortunate to have the opportunity to visit many different places throughout my life. Doing that has allowed me experience and learn about cultures and perspectives I otherwise would have been unaware of. Some of the favorite places I’ve been to are Mexico, London, Iceland, and China. I think it’s important to expand our horizons because the world is much bigger than we think it is, and simply staying put runs the risk of becoming close-minded. I would not be the person I am now if I didn’t have first hand experience of different cultures and mindsets.
Out of all the sports I've experimented with throughout the years, basketball is the one I have been most committed to. Last year I had the opportunity to be a part of my school's varsity team, which not only helped me further develop my skills but also allowed me to practice teamwork and dynamics.
Music has just been a constant thing throughout my entire life. Whether I'm listening to it or performing it, words cannot express how vital it's like to me. My top three artists are Phoebe Bridgers, Noah Kahan, and Taylor Swift, but I also really enjoy listening to Latin American music my mom introduces to me (I recommend Shakira's older albums).
Personally, I was a member of the Worcester Youth Orchestra, where I played the flute. I am continuing that pursuit by joining WPI's orchestra this year. I also play the piano in my free time.
