Humanities

Humanities is taught by Mrs. Small, and combines both English and History into an engaging course. The main goal of the class is to gain an understanding of what it means to be human. In doing so, we have looked at multiple different types of literature, such as Walden, Sapiens, as well as different excerpts and other historical readings.

Walden Quote

"The fault-finder will find faults even in paradise" (Thoreau).

Education Essay

This piece of writing is an evidence-based synthesis essay, and was the first paper we completed in Humanities. Its purpose was to encourage discussion regarding a topic regarding education, develop personal voice, and to create an argument that connects to a wider academic discussion. I argue that schools should teach both the benefits to and integrate more kinesthetic ways of learning. Engaging in more physical activity during the school day can improve students overall mental health, and there are also specific biological benefits to moving more often.

Satirical Analysis

The Satirical Analysis Essay required an analysis on how specific rhetorical devices were used to fulfill the purpose of one or more satires. I analyzed an excerpt from the Museum of the Plains White Person written by Rayna Green. In this excerpt, Green utilizes reversal to switch the position of museums and the typical white American with the regular Native American. Supported by irony and different comedic devices, Green uses this excerpt to undermine museum practices regarding the lack of respect shown to Native American culture.
